Yesterday, I watched a second Brie Larson film - Short Term 12 - in which she plays the supervisor in a group home for troubled teenagers. It was shot in a very realistic way and dealt with very real issues, though not without humour. It got a bit melodramatic towards the end, but overall I thought it was well put together, thought-provoking and emotive. All the performances were excellent and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for something meaningful and affecting to watch.

I also finally got round to watching Love, Simon, which is a high school movie about a gay teenager struggling with the idea of coming out to his family and friends in senior year. I wasn't sure what to think about this film - it falls into many of the standard promblemtic high school movie tropes, all the characters are fantasically privileged (the protagonist picks up several of his friends on the way to school every day and all their houses are *huge*) and the obstacles/issues faced by Simon didn't feel very serious to me. He also did some quite appalling things to hurt his friends along the way, which was pointed out to him, but which were mitigated and forgiven very easily. Having said that, the film dealt with the pitfalls of social media well, and also showed actual kissing between a mixed race gay couple, which was extremely awesome. So, two steps forward, one step back?

Wednesday evening saw us spending a very pleasant few hours at Draughts under Waterloo. We spent most of the time on a very enjoyable game of Powergrid (I won unexpectedly and very abruptly before we even reached the final phase), but we also played a fun little card game called No Thanks. This involved pushing your luck on rejecting high value cards where the goal is to get the lowest score, and was both interesting and amusing.
