Brie Larson managed to get an all-star cast for her directorial debut, a small and sweet film about being your true self and not giving up on your dreams. Kit feels like a disappointment when she fails at art college and tries to fit into a normal life to make her parents happy, but wonders if there might be more out there when she gets an invitation to the mysterious Store. Samuel L Jackson is kinda boggling as the unicorn salesman, but Joan Cusack and Bradley Whitford make a fantastic pair as Kit's parents. My favourite character, though, is Virgil from the hardware store, played with incredibly appealing understatement by Mamoudou Athie. He is particularly impressive in the nuanced way he portrays Virgil's desire to help and support Kit, while at the same time fearing for her mental health and financial security.

I don't think the film entirely works throughout, but overall it's pretty adorable and the emotionally satisfying climax did make me cry. Plus, unicorns!
