The Case of the Imaginary Detective review
Sep. 5th, 2008 11:36 pmThe Case of the Imaginary Detective, by Karen Joy Fowler, is difficult to define. It wasn't *bad*, per se, but nothing really happened and it didn't really seem to be about anything much. There was a minor mystery running throughout, which never really came to a conclusion, and the whole thing seemed to be a series of mostly disconnected incidents, linked together by a collection of rather mundane characters.
I got the distinct impression that Fowler started out as a sci-fi/fantasy fangirl, though, as there were scattered references to obscure Star Trek facts, and a bizarre section about the Lord Of The Rings version of Trivial Pursuits, as well as some discussion (and also rather amusing exerpts from) fanfiction of the graphic slash variety.
Very odd book, not at all like The Jane Austen Book Club, which at least had some semblance of a plot and a more obvious point to it.
