Apt Pupil got on my DVD rental list because it is a Bryan Singer movie, and I think he's an excellent director.

It started off as an intriguing and intelligent study of influence and manipulation.  By the half-way mark, I was fascinated to find out where it was heading - and then it turned into a bad thriller.  I'm not sure where else the story could have gone, but I would have preferred it to stay on an intellectual level, rather than devolving into horror movie violence.

As Stephen King adaptations go, I'm guessing this must be above average. It's a very long time since I read the book, but I seem to remember that's pretty much where the story goes in the book, too.

I got the impression he had an interesting idea and then didn't quite know where to go with it.
