My brain hurts...

Today's riding lesson was rather more exercise for the mind than the body. I spent most of it trotting round and round the school without stirrups, which would have looked incredibly tedious to the outside observer. However, what I was actually trying to do was to keep Joe on inside bend whilst still getting him into the corners - not remotely easy.
This involved - hands up, outside rein against the neck, inside shoulder back, and inside leg giving lots of pressure. What this was supposed to do was to push Joe to the outside, away from the inside leg, whilst still keeping him looking slightly towards the inside. What it mostly resulted in was him turning to the inside a lot.
I believe there might have been some improvement at certain isolated points, and it was all very interesting, but I'm not sure we'll be doing dressage any time soon.
