Golden Compass review
Dec. 10th, 2007 10:47 pmLargely, I thought the Golden Compass was very good - though I agree with others who've said they tried to cram in a bit too much in two hours and, consequently, it felt somewhat rushed.
Nicole Kidman managed to be extremely creepy, particularly in her moment of masochism, though I was confused as to why her evil monkey never spoke.
Daniel Craig still has the most amazing eyes since Elijah Wood in The Fellowship of The Ring.
Afterwards, Dave criticised Lyra's shifting accent, but it seemed clear to me that she dropped into "common speak" quite deliberately, either to fit in with her friends or piss off the adults who were trying to get her to act in a more refined manner.
Overall, it never made me go "wow", but was consistently enjoyable. I have no comment on whether it's a good adaptation of the book as I only read the first one, a very long time ago, and it's not something my brain has chosen to remember. The film wasn't a patch on the stage production, though.
