Perception is a funny thing. I went into Dead Man's Chest with high expectations and was very disappointed. I went into At World's End with low expectations and really enjoyed it. Does this mean film 3 is better than film 2? I don't know.

I did really enjoy At World's End, though. The plot is largely nonsense, but it's highly enjoyable, well put together nonsense, and it didn't feel too long, despite running to almost three hours. It's darker than I was expecting, which I think was a good thing, as it surprised me, and it was the surprise factor of the first film that made it such a stand-out. The real reason I enjoyed it so much, though, was the characters. All of them have both good and bad points and, despite betrayal on all sides, I liked them all and felt sympathetic towards them all to a greater or lesser degreed (even Davey Jones and Beckett). There was a great deal of character depth going on, and this is always a good thing, in my opinion. It also meant that Johnny Depp's performance didn't need to carry the film, which is also a good thing, since Captain Jack Sparrow (whilst still entertaining) doesn't have the same impact for me any more as he did in the first film.

Plus, Keira Knightley is still the best eye candy around as far as I'm concerned, and she benefited a great deal from not being stuck in a corset this time round. It's also nice to see a Mikei monkey getting considerable screen time.
