Closer review
May. 25th, 2007 09:27 pmIt's taken me three tries to see Closer. The first time, I went with friends to the cinema on Orange Wednesday and it was sold out so we saw Million Dollar Baby instead (a horrible mistake and a film I wish I could forget). The second time, it turned up in the post, sat on the arm of the sofa for several weeks and then I sent it back because I didn't feel like watching it. I put it back on my DVD rental list a few weeks later, but it's taken months to turn up again.
I'm glad I persevered, because it's an excellent film. Not to everyone's taste certainly (Dave watched about five minutes and stomped off in disgust), and it benefited greatly from the fact that I didn't care about any of the characters (not something I usually say about a film). Not much happens and most of the characters are unpleasant (which is what I was going to say about Titus Groan, and may still do so), but it's brilliantly crafted and excellently written (more things to say about Titus Groan). The last couple of minutes twist the whole thing onto an entirely different level, and left me processing for quite a while after the credits rolled (don't know if I can say that about Titus Groan yet, because I haven't finished it yet...), and the acting was superb from all four characters.
One to absorb but not to linger on, I think.
