Sean Connery and Christian Slater as medi-eval detective monks sounds like a comedy to me. However, despite a few brief amusing moments, Name of the Rose is mostly very intelligent, intriguing, thought-provoking, somewhat unpleasant, and extremely well done. Definitely recommended.

I presume you noticed the significance of the Connery character's name? Mildly topical, in a way. The book is pretty disturbing in places - how did they deal with the door to the chapel, if at all, and if you feel you can tell me without spoiling?

Ah yes, Brother William of Baskerville!

As for the chapel door, I think we may have to take this discussion onto email or in person, as I have no idea what you're talking about! Which possibly suggests that they didn't deal with it at all...
