My first Michael Chabon novel - but likely won't be my last. It's about two young men writing comic books in New York in the 1940s, but also about Jews trying to escape Europe during the war and the effects of those events on those living in America. Really phenomenal writing, really great characters and story – apart from 50 pages around the 400-page mark that were really jarringly unpleasant and almost made me stop reading. Epic and emotive and funny and heartfelt – though the ending felt a little rushed and abrupt, which was weird after over 600 pages. Really great read overall.
