I've had two hits and one miss reading William Boyd books before this one, which was unfortunately another miss.
Kay Fischer is a divorced architect dealing with the machinations of her dodgy business partner and the continuing demands of her ex-husband, when an old man turns up claiming to be her father and asking her to travel with him to Portugal to find a woman he hasn’t seen for over 30 years
I quite liked Kay as a character, but it was really annoying the way the old man kept refusing to tell her things, so as to draw the story out. The setting kept confusing me as well because there was nothing at all to ground it in the mid-1930s so it surprised me every time the date was mentioned.
By the time we got the jump back in time to Manila to get the full story around pg 75, I realised I actually didn’t care and decided to stop reading it
I then did something I often criticise my husband for doing and looked up the rest of the story on Wikipedia – and was really glad I gave up!
