The Penguin Lessons by Tom Michell is a nonfiction book about a young man who went to teach in Argentina in the 1970s, rescued a penguin from an oil slick and - then hijinx ensued...?
I thought it sounded fun, but I ended up DNF-ing it before I got halfway through.
The section about the oil slick was incredibly unpleasant - deliberately and reasonably so - but that was definitely out of keeping with the present tone of the book as a whole. But that wasn't the problem.
While the book was published in 2015, the writing style, general tone and aspects of the content were very much more 1970s in aesthetic, which was a bit off-putting in places. And it was also - well - rather boring...
