I had high hopes for Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, as it had been highly recommended to me by several people.

It certainly has an interesting concept - there's a cafe in Tokyo where you can travel to the past but there are lots of rules that restrict what you can and can't do on your trip.

And it plays out quite effectively in some ways - but overall, I didn't connect with it in the way I'd hoped.

I had some issue with the writing and the way information was provided to the reader, it all felt like it was over-explained, which reduced the impact, and I wasn't very happy about certain things that happened and certain decisions several of the characters made.

But there were some aspects I enjoyed and some bits that I found affecting. So not a bad book by any means, just not as good, in my view, as I had hoped.
