How do I even describe Harry Clarke?
The only reason we went to see it was because I saw a poster for it on the Underground and it stars Billy Crudup, whom I've loved since Almost Famous and Stage Beauty.
It's a one-man show, with him basically telling a very long story about his character's journey from childhood to mid-30s, over the course of 80 minutes, without a break.
Now, I realise that doesn't sound very interesting - but, within the course of the telling, he plays at least ten very distinct characters and it's an absolute tour de force.
I was mesmerised by the tale and the performances - the twists and turns were fantastic (downtrodden gay youngster, Philip, creates an alter-ego, Harry Clarke, who leads him on a daring adventure into another identity) but it's the acting that really makes the show so good.
So impressive. Also funny, painful, tragic, desperate, triumphant and cringe-worthy. All of human life is here - in one fantastic actor.
Highly recommended.
