I really wanted to like Set My Heart to Five by Simon Stephenson...

It's about an android called Jared and his emotional awakening - and I didn't dislike Jared at all. In fact, I thought he was really sweet and quite funny, and I was at least partially invested in his journey.

However, his narrative voice was incredibly annoying, with far too many exclamation points and a lot of very awkward and repetitive phrasing. Now, I totally understand what the author was trying to do - not least because Jared explains his 'speech' patterns in the narrative itself - he's trying to sound more human so as to put actual humans at ease, but he's not very good at it, so it's very clunky.

But that unfortunately didn't stop it being really annoying to me - and, after 70 pages, I decided that - in Jared's words - I cannot!

I'm sure this would be upsetting to Jared because he doesn't like humans being sad, but I cannot...
