I picked up The Legacy by Caroline Bond from a box of books my brother was intending to give away - and it turned out not to be remotely what I was expecting. I somehow thought it was going to be a psychological thriller with a tantalising and possibly horrifying twist and potentially a violent end.
It's actually an extremely well-written and well-observed drama about three siblings dealing with the family estate after their father's death. Things a complicated by the stipulations of the will, the fractured relationships between the family members and the fact that the parents divorced five years before after the father had an affair (and had been living with the other woman for the intervening years).
There are multiple viewpoints presented, which helps to form a fascinating tapestry of perspectives and provides lots of insight into how each of the characters sees the others and whether or not their opinions are accurate.
I thoroughly enjoyed the intricacies of how the plot and character arcs played out and found the ultimate ending very satisfying on all counts.
A very good read.
