The Lincoln Highway
Dec. 21st, 2023 09:03 pmWhen I first discovered (well over a year ago) that Amor Towles had a new book coming out - The Lincoln Highway - I was very excited as one of his previous books - A Gentleman In Moscow - is one of my all-time favourites.
It's taken me a while to get hold of a copy - but I wasn't disappointed.
Four boys start out in Nebraska in 1954. Two of them want to go to San Francisco for a new life, while the other two want to go to New York for an inheritance. There are, in fact, four separate agendas - but only one car...
Of course, none of that is what it's really about - which is family obligations and expectations, debts and favours, individual moral compasses, and finding a place in the world.
The way Towles weaves together the multiple and very varied narrative viewpoints and threads is masterful, the prose is exquisite, and the range of characters is truly wonderful. It's very sad but also triumphant - a real rollercoaster of emotion and depth.
