The Secret
Nov. 12th, 2023 06:29 pmThe Secret is the 28th book in the Jack Reacher series, and still has Lee Child's name on it, so he apparently hasn't completely passed the writing over to his brother, Andrew, yet.
I haven't been massively keen on the co-written ones so far, but I do love listening to Jeff Harding reading the audio versions, so I decided to give this one a go.
And it was - fine.
There were quite a few excellent Reacher tropes to enjoy, and it rattled along at a decent pace. The narrative was split between Reacher and the two women committing the murders, which I enjoyed because I thought they were very interesting and engaging characters.
But, having said that, the plot felt pretty thin overall and Reacher didn't seem to actually do all that much. Plus the book was pretty short (though the previous seven have all also been well under 400 pages), so I can't say I'm wildly enthusiastic about future instalments.
Jeff Harding remains a big draw for me, though, so I suspect I will continue to listen to the series as new ones appear.
