We went to the 'special presentation' of Richard Linklater's new movie, Hitman, at the BFI Film Festival last night - and it was really good!
It's about an everyday guy who gets in over his head when he's promoted from 'audio guy in the van' to 'field agent pretending to be a hitman' in his part-time job away from teaching philosophy to college students...
Glen Powell is phenomenal in the title role - his 'true' identity of teacher Gary and his 'pretend' identity of hitman Ron look completely different at the start of the film (just from slight physical amendments and a huge amount of really great acting) and gradually start melding together as the story progresses in a very impressive way. One of my favourite moments came partway through, during one of his lectures, when one student leaned over to another and whispered: "When did our professor get hot?"
The whole movie is incredibly well-written, well-acted, highly entertaining and very funny - though it just tipped over the edge of 'actually not really funny at all' at one moment towards the end and I couldn't quite maintain my 'leaning into the spirit of the story' to feel entirely satisfied by the ultimate conclusion. But if you can fully check your morality at the door and go along with the comedic tone right to the end - this is highly recommended.
