Last night, I played Caylus 1303 for the first time - a modernisation of the original Caylus game. It's an interesting version of a worker placement game, where players can add and also remove action spaces, as well as invalidating them via a mechanism of sabotaging the other players. There are resources to collect (of course) and buildings to construct with them (of course) but it has aspects I hadn't come across before and a pleasing progression towards engine-building.

We actually only played half the turns (due to time constraints) and I had the most points at the end of round five - but I certainly wouldn't have won if we'd played the other four turns, as the other two players had moved onto later stages of point collection, while I was still languishing in the quick-win early tactics.

I would definitely like to play this again and do better!

This week, I also read A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine, for family book club - and loved it!
