The Digger comics by Ursula Vernon have been gathered together into this 800-page volume, which I'm glad I read on Kindle! Someone recommended it to me recently and the opening of this wonderful tale about a wombat accidentally (or not) getting mixed up in a multi-front conflict between gods, fanatics, hyenas and prophets seemed familiar. But I definitely hadn't read the whole thing before, and it's great!

Digger herself is a fantastic protagonist (though she hit me in the face a lot with my unconscious bias, because I was continually surprised to being with when she was gendered as female, since I kept automatically thinking of her as male - gah!) - she provides a brilliantly humorous, very down-to-earth exasperation with all the esoteric weirdness she encounters, but also a huge amount of heart in caring for the companions she finds along the way.

The story of Ed the hyena is absolutely heartbreaking from start to finish, providing a backdrop of real emotion to an otherwise exciting and very entertaining tale. The book is deeply affecting in places and deeply weird in others, but it's the connections between the characters that keep it so compelling.

After all the build-up, though, the ending felt a little abrupt - but then I could have happily carried on reading about Digger's adventures for another 800 pages at least.

Highly recommended.
