I've heard a lot of good things about Kate Mosse and her writing over the years but never read any of her books, so thought I would give The Burning Chambers a try, when I spotted it in a charity shop.

It's well written, clearly well researched and the setting is very immersive (France in the 1450s). I learned a lot about religious history, I liked most of the characters (particularly Minou) and the pace was good. But it was very long, the "secret from the past that will change everything" trope was a bit overdone, and it was very sad and pretty grim in places. I liked where it ended up eventually, but the main antagonist got a bit cartoon-y in the climax and the whole thing was just a bit too drawn out for my tastes.

But I certainly couldn't write a successful book of this scope, and I can definitely see why people really like her stuff.
