This is the second in Marcus Sakey's Brilliance Saga, telling the story of Nick Cooper, who gets embroiled in a US-wide conflict between 'brilliants', who have special abilities, and 'norms', who don't. Cooper is a low-level brilliant who works for the government, tracking brilliants who commit crimes. He also had an invested interest in the future of brilliants, as his young daughter is a very powerful one.
In this book, everyone is looking for a scientist who has developed a serum that could have global consequences for both brilliants and norms. Meanwhile, the US government and the most powerful brilliants in the world are edging towards civil war.
I liked the introduction of a new POV character in Ethan Park, the junior partner of the sought-after scientist. His narrative strand was the one I was most invested in throughout the book. I also liked Cooper's continuing difficulties in trying to bring people together, when all the factions seemed set on conflict.
It's a interesting story, with lots of layers and intrigue. The audiobook narrator does a good job, and I'm definitely going to listen to the final instalment at some point.
