We went to the cinema for the first time in a while last night, to see Don't Worry, Darling.
The main character, Alice, is living in a perfect, 50s-style community in the desert, where the men drive off in awesome cards every morning, to a mysterious 'headquarters' to do secret work, while the women clean, socialise, shop and have dinner and a drink ready for when their husbands step through the door at the end of the day.
There's lots to praise - the worldbuilding within the Victory Project community is well done, the visuals are gorgeous, and Florence Pugh gives a masterful and engaging performance, as Alice starts to question what's going on. It was very tense all the way through, but there was little that was actually really icky or scary (which is a plus, in my book!). And some of the issues raised and mysteries revealed were quite interesting.
But it's ultimately an unsatisfying experience - there's no real showdown between Alice and the bad guy, the chase scene makes very little sense once you know what's going on, and there are too many questions left unanswered at the end. I don't usually mind an ambiguous ending, but there was too much here that didn't hold up to any scrutiny and left me confused and a bit annoyed.
