When Les Mis got its major staging overhaul, back in early 2020, a group of us decided to go and see the new version - in late March...

Fast forward to last night (2.5 years later), and we finally saw the show!

I wasn't overly enthused, as I felt over-familiar with the material and as if I was a bit over Les Mis in general. But a good dinner, fine wine, and great friends got me right in the mood - and overall, I loved it!

All the different sets and the way they moved on and off the stage were really clever and effective. All my favourite songs and moments were present and correct. Marius was still as punchable as ever (enhanced by my view that he was the weakest vocalist in the cast), but Enjolras stole all of his scenes in his hottest incarnation ever (I'd wave his flag any day - though I was a bit concerned about his back, hanging off the back of the cart like that every night...).

But my heart will always belong to Javert, and he didn't disappoint. Stars was phenomenal and, while I wasn't overly keen on some of the creative decisions for the suicide, it still got me right in the feels. Also - best hair, best coat, and best smile (when he finally got to show it at the curtain call)!

Some of the vocal stylings might not have been quite my cup of tea (there was more talk-singing than I would normally prefer) but it's still a damn good show and I'm glad I went.
