I picked up Mrs England by Stacey Halls at the local station book exchange because it looked interesting. It's one of those 'everything is not as it seems, protagonist will discover dark secrets' books, which I have a conflicted relationship with, usually. Often, with this kind of book, I'm more interested in finding out what happens in the end than in reading the actual story, so I end up skimming and being dissatisfied with my reading experience.
In this case, however, the writing was very engaging, I liked the protagonist a lot and, while I was apprehensive about where the book might be heading, I found the conclusion very satisfying.
Ruby May is a trained children's nurse, who takes a position with a family in Yorkshire, where the mistress, Mrs England, is a bit of an enigma. Ruby has secrets in her own life, but also feels unsettled by aspects of the England family dynamics.
I got invested in Ruby's story very quickly and the book was very involving throughout, so I had no inclinations to skim. It was a little strange that such a young woman would have three men revolving in her orbit over the course of the book, and it was also odd that the title character was barely in it for the first half of the book. But things got revealed and resolved in a way I found satisfying, and I really enjoyed the book overall.
I will definitely look for more by this author.
