I went back and forth on whether or not to persevere with this book. I love Kristine Kathryn Rusch's Retrieval Artist series, so I was hoping this would be just as compelling and enjoyable - and unfortunately it wasn't.

The writing is still really good and I found the world of the story very interesting. Plus, I do love a split narrative, where there are viewpoint protagonists on both sides of a conflict.

But the nature of that conflict put one side very much in the wrong, which made it difficult for me to connect to the protagonist on that side - especially since she was involved in some pretty horrific fighting tactics. What tipped it was that the other side (while sort of defensible since they were invaded and being slaughtered) also discovered a way to do horrific things to their enemies - and it just all got a bit too grim for my tastes.

So, since it's a long book and only the first of five, I decided to cut my losses and read the next Retrieval Artist book instead!
