I realise I am very late to the party in discovering Zadie Smith - but wow!

On Beauty tells the story of the Belsey family and their various relationships, in and around a small Boston university.

The writing is exquisite, everything is beautifully observed, and the characters are all so layered and fascinating. And I really wasn't expecting it to be funny - though this lessens as the book goes on.

I felt it got a bit preachy in the last third, and the ending seemed a bit nebulous. But this is the kind of writing that makes me think I should just give up in despair - or perhaps work a bit harder to improve my own.

I'll definitely be reading more!
