Medalon is the first in the Demon Child trilogy by Jennifer Fallon.
Based on the name of the series and the shadowy, bluish face on the cover, I was expecting contemporary horror, so I was very pleasantly surprised to discover it's actually high fantasy!
Both the prose and the storytelling are a bit clunky in places, but I connected with the characters early on, and the combination of magical awakenings and political machinations appealed to me. The multi-POV structure also worked well, with one POV character knowing a lot more about what was going on than the others, giving the reader an opportunity to get clued in occasionally.
But the whole thing was just dragged out too much, over too many pages. Two of the main characters got captured and escaped from various places multiple times, which prevented the plot from going anywhere over several hundred pages in the middle. And, by the end, I'm afraid I'd just lost interest. So, while I enjoyed the worldbuilding and liked the characters, I'm not going to read the other two books in the series.
