This is the second in the Indexing series by Seanan McGuire, where the essence of fairytale narratives tries to gain a foothold in the world by manipulating reality and forcing people to act out aspects of certain tales.

Protagonist Henry leads a team of agents, whose job is to seek out active stories and shut them down, sometimes saving those involved and returning them to normal life and other times locking up irredeemable bad guys in a special prison.

This book sees several of the villains escaping the prison, meaning that Henry has to lead her team in an attempt to stop them. This is complicated when a figure from her past takes over her body and traps her in the Snow White wood.

Understanding the world and already knowing the characters really helped me get into the story better this time around, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not least because it was narrated by Mary Robinette Kowal, who does an excellent job. The only slight downside was that she'd saddled herself with a difficult voice for a particular character, who had a viewpoint strand in this book, and the voice got a bit wearing after a while.

Otherwise, it was great to find out more about various characters' backgrounds, and spend time in this world again. It doesn't look like the series continues after this one, though, which is a shame.
