Last night, some friends introduced us to Azul, a tile-collecting game that appealed very much to my sensibilities as a game-player. Essentially, you have to collect tiles from a central supply and add them to your own board, in such a way that you complete certain patterns, in order to gain points.
The complication comes in the restrictions placed on how many and which types of tiles are available to pick up, and in what combinations, and also where you can place them on your board, to make sure they end up in the place that will give you the most points.
It's a very pretty game, and also a very enjoyable one - at least for me, since I really like pattern-matching games where you have to plan tile placement. There was some healthy rivalry involved, since you have to pay attention to what the other players are doing, so yo don't end up giving them the opportunity to get too many points.
I won by a reasonable margin, but I'm certain I would have enjoyed the game regardless, and would be very keen to play it again.
