Jemma Spark's Jill Series - Part Two
Dec. 19th, 2021 10:02 amI've just finished books 4-7 in Jemma Spark's continuation of the Jill Pony Books series, and I enjoyed all of them. It's fun to see Jill as a young adult, and Mummy in a new relationship, and new characters, along with lots of the old ones popping up as well.
I did notice in this latter half of the series, that there's quite a lot of Jill judging people, mocking people, and criticising people for their appearance, which was a bit unfortunate. There was certainly some of that in the original books by Ruby Ferguson, but this felt like more, and is also something I would have hoped would be reduced, rather than increased, in books written now.
I also found it amusing that Jill had a meeting with her literary agent, where he gave her some fan letters that complained about the subject matter of the new series of books! I recognised myself when the agent said there would always be 'some crazy old lady obsessed with commas'!
So, I suspect this was the real author venting some frustration about her reviews? Generally, I believe, the response to her continuation of the Jill books has been positive - as it certainly is from me - but I do also feel (in my crazy old lady guise) that commas are important - and that it wouldn't take all that much for the surface issues of the text to be corrected. I would definitely volunteer to do it myself!
