This is the second part of Laini Taylor's duology, following on directly from Strange the Dreamer. The cliffhanger ending of the first booked annoyed me, but the way it gets resolved over time in the second book is excellent.

There were times I was shocked and upset by what happened in this book, but the overall conclusion was very satisfying and I really liked how everything worked out in the end.

I was particularly impressed with the treatment, development and presentation of the antagonists in the book. They nearly all got layers, understandable motivations, and several had the opportunity for emotive and engaging redemption arcs.

I recently read another book with teenage protagonists, which had a lot of teen melodrama and which I had difficulty getting invested in. This book also contains a lot of angst in relation to the emotions and experiences of young protagonists - but it involved me deeply and I was very much swept along for the rollercoaster ride of the events and emotions in the book.

I was extremely impressed with the way this book was written, the way events gradually came together, and the way the characters almost all got deep analysis and their own story arc. Really excellent stuff.
