I wasn't remotely interested in the new Dune movie, based on my knowledge of the source material and my viewing of the trailer. But Dave was keen, and it's always easy to persuade me to go to the cinema, so I went along - and was glad I did, as I really enjoyed it overall.
It's a grand, sweeping, sci-fi drama - which is both its best and least good feature.
It did a good job of getting me invested in the characters, and the visuals were gorgeous.
But the initial voice-over exposition was very clunky, and there wasn't enough space in even 155 minutes to give the heavily portentous and supposedly rich history, prophecy, mythology and world-building the significance it deserved, and the film seemed to think it had. The sound design and music, in particular, were trying to make everything incredibly meaningful, and I don't think the film itself delivered fully on that intention.
It's also a bit disheartening, in this day and age, for a non-white community to look to a straight, white man as their saviour. Sigh.
Still, even at its ridiculous length, I thought this was a good film (in some ways, I wanted it to be much longer - a TV series might have worked better) and I'd be quite keen to see the next one.
