I feel as if Marvel has been systematically disappointing me for nearly ten years, though I'm sure I haven't hated every Marvel effort in that time, so I'm probably being unfair. And I do keep coming back for more!
This time, with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, I was very glad about that - as I thought it was great! Perhaps a bit too long and a bit too sprawling, but it didn't feel like it dragged, and it was largely *gorgeous*.
Michelle Yeoh and Awkwafina were my main reasons for wanting to see it and they were both awesome, but the main guy was also good, and giving the bad guy an understandable motivation for his actions is always a good way to avoid caricature or one-note opposition. The film was actually layered in deep emotion, as well has having kirins, kitsune, weird pig-chickens, and a dragon that took me straight back to The Never-Ending Story.
The film was fairly well grounded in the real world for the first half, but took a definite weird and very silly turn with the appearance of a character from way back in the MCU. But, overall, the silly versus emotive was pretty well balanced.
So, yay! A really good addition to the MCU and a great night out all round.
