I wasn't going to bother with the new Disney movie, but I'm glad Dave persuaded me to watch, mostly because of the gorgeous animation. The diversity within the South East Asian setting was also good to see. Plus, the standard Disney formula delivered the expected emotional arc and occasional humour.

Raya has to go on a quest to find the pieces of the broken dragon gem in order to save her people from being turned to stone, and also bring the various nations of the realm back together. Along the way, she releases the last remaining dragon and they team up to teach people how to trust again.

It's a pretty hokey plot, with very few surprises, but Disney know how to tell that story really well, so it works overall. There's some good stuff about found family, and I do like it when characters give up on the idea of a frontal assault and try something different.

Really beautiful in both visuals and message, and a great new entry into the Disney princess canon with Raya herself.
