Realm of Ash by Tasha Suri is the second in her Books of Ambha series, and just as rich and beautifully written as the first one. The narrator of the audiobook as a very silky voice, which lends itself well to the desert setting and layered characters.
In this book, Arwa (younger sister of Mehr from the first book) finds herself widowed and bundled off to a hermitage in the wilderness at the age of 21. But she doesn't stay secluded for long, instead being taken to court and asked to help the bastard son of the emperor in a dangerous research project.
Arwa is a woman in a world where women have little power or influence, but she uses her strength of character, her heritage and her spiritual power to fight for herself, her people and her home.
It's a long book and the story unwinds slowly, but it never feels like it's dragging, and Arwa makes for an engaging protagonist. The romance was satisfying and the ultimate achievements of the characters powerful.
