Mortal Heart
Dec. 25th, 2020 11:07 amIt's taken me a long time to get round to reading the third in the His Fair Assassin series by Robin LaFevers. I liked the first one a lot, but not so much the second, and this one came somewhere in between. I liked the setup - Annith is held back at the convent while other, younger, less well trained girls are sent out on missions, and she eventually decides to leave on her own to try and find out what's going on.
But her inner conflict and questioning was very repetitive (realistic but a bit tedious after a while) and the initial stages of her journey felt as if things were happening to her, rather than her taking action to make progress.
It was fun to see the characters from the other two books again, things definitely ramped up in the second half, and there were some interesting revelations to be found regarding Annith's background and that of the love interest, Balthazar.
I'm not sure the outcome of the romance entirely worked for me, and I have to admit I was skimming a bit before the end, but the world is richly drawn, the characters are interesting, and the scope of the series (and how the books all connect together) is impressive.
