Red, White and Royal Blue, by Casey McQuiston, is a contemporary romance, which is not a genre I normally go for, but people kept recommending it to me so I eventually decided to give it a go - and I really enjoyed it!

It's a gay love story between the son of the first female president (Alex), and the younger grandson of the British queen (Henry).

First of all, it was lovely to spend time in an alternative world where Trump wasn't president, and where the 2020 US election went ahead without the pandemic getting in the way.

But, over and above that, I loved all the characters (particularly Alex's sister, June, and best friend, Nora). The story was sweet and funny, but I also liked the way the protagonists' vulnerabilities were explored, as well as the social pressures they were under, due to their respective positions.

There was a fairly realistic portrayal of the press in this situation, but nothing in the book was too dark or traumatic overall. I read over 200 pages in one sitting, until past midnight, to finish the book last night, and it was a great, light, fluffy book to dive into.
