I was checking through my audiobook library for the next thing to listen to, and came across Lament by Maggie Stiefvater, which turned out to be a paranormal romance with faeries.

I liked the characters, and the world-building was good. But I'm never going to be able to get on board with a romance between a 16-year-old human girl and a 1000-year-old supernatural creature, no matter how youthful and cute he is. Technically, I guess Luke is also human and has been cursed never to die, but he's still had 1000 years of lived exprience, and this does not make him a suitable partner for Deirdre in my mind...

There also wasn't a huge amount of plot, other than the two of them mooning over each other and there being unclear obstacles to them being together (though I suppose this is what romance stories often are).

Deirdre did impress me with her active pursuit of saving Luke and James, going to take on the faerie queen at the end, despite the odds being against her. But the climax was a bit confusing and a bit deus ex machina, and there was no aftermath at all, which is always a shame.

Still, it kept me interested all the way through, and there were some interesting relationship dynamics along the way. I'm just not that much of a fan of straight-up romances, so it's a bit unfair of me to criticise!
