A couple of our friends just introduced us to Quantum, a game on Board Game Arena. The aim of the game is to place quantum cubes on various planets around the board. You have dice that represent the spaceships in your fleet. High numbers on the dice mean your ships can move fast, and low numbers on the dice mean your ships are likely to win fights. In order to place cubes, you either have to arrange your ships around planets in particular configurations, or defeat enough opponent ships to get your dominance level high enough. If you lose a fight, your ship gets punted off the board and you have to waste an action redeploying it.
There are various special rules and abilities that allow you to change the numbers on your dice, teleport them across the board or move/fight in different ways. You can also collect cards that give you additional abilities that will be different to those of the other players.
So, there's a certain amount of planning you can do to get your dice in the right positions with the right numbers on them, but this can easily be scuppered by someone attacking you and punting your dice off the board. I lucked out because I picked up a card near the start that allowed me re-rolls in battles. This gave me the confidence to attack more often than I otherwise would have done, and made it much more likely that I would win each fight. I managed to win the game (by being the first to place a fifth cube on a planet) mainly through aggression, which is not how I would normally play a game, but which lent itself very well as a strategy in this one.
It was highly enjoyable, and I would definitely play again, since a different set of cards would prompt a different strategy another time, which would make the game interesting to try again.
