Last night's online gaming session included Tokaido, a game I have seen but not played before. It's one of those games where the mechanics are very simple but the strategy is very complex, and I didn't do particularly well, but I really enjoyed it and would love to play again.

The board is a long stretch of different locations along a road. There are six or seven different types of place, and each has an activity that can garner you points or money. When it's your turn, you can move as far ahead as you want to a free space at a location, and complete the action there (collecting points/money, having an encounter, painting part of a picture, buying stuff). But the next player to take a turn is always the one furthest back along the road. So, if you jump too far ahead, you can end up having to wait while other players take several turns.

There are a few places along the road where everyone has to stop for a meal, and lots of ways to build up end-game points to be tallied when everyone reaches the final inn.

So, it's all about managing your resources, maximising the number of turns you get, and trying to make sure you hit the most important places along the road, to be able to complete your various objectives.

It's really fun and really interesting, and there's a lot more for me to learn about how it works before I feel like I'd be able to do well.

Plus, the artwork and the board design are absolutely gorgeous. It was pretty enough on the electronic version on my small laptop screen - I'd love to play the physical version and be able to examine all the art more closely.

Definitely one to play again, both in the near future online, and also more long-term, perhaps with a physical version of my very own.
