Onward and Becoming

We recently saw Onward, which hadn't been on my list of films to watch, but then got a five star review in Empire so we decided to give it a try. The opening section was quite fun, then it definitely dipped a bit, but we stuck it out and the second half was awesome, particularly the ending, which had me both cheering and tearing up.
The story was pretty weird, but it took some unexpected turns that made me appreciate the good writing. I loved the fact that the mum had her own adventure, proactively going to help her sons and making a fabulous friend along the way. And I loved the fact that Barley was excited when Ian demonstrated his magical power, rather than being jealous and resentful. In fact, I thought Barley was going to be annoying and he actually turned out to be my favourite character, because he was so invested in Ian and supportive of him all the way through, which was refreshing and ended up basically being the whole point.
There were so many great moments and exciting action bits and heart-warming exchanges in the second half. I'm really glad we stuck with it to the end.
Also this week, I finally got around to reading Becoming by Michelle Obama, which I really lucked out by picking up at the library the day we started staying at home. It's one of those books that has been really hyped but it absolutely lived up to my expectations. It was really engaging and compelling and honest and funny and fascinating all the way through. Despite the fact that Michelle Obama and I are worlds apart in practically every sphere of existence, I totally related to her and felt as if she was speaking her truth directly to me. I loved every word of this book and would urge everyone to read it.
