Star Fleet

On our podcast, Dave's second choice of media to review was Star Fleet, a 1980s supermarionation TV show about plucky space pilots battling an evil power threatening the Earth. I'd never heard of it, but really enjoyed the first few episodes, so we carried on watching the rest, and finished the whole series last night. It was generally a lot of fun, with some interesting character development, more significance and agency for the two female characters than I expected, and a plot arc that went to some unexpected places. The progress of the main plot was fairly glacial and it did get a bit repetitive towards the end, but it was much better than I thought it would be, and had more layers than I would have thought for a kids' show from over 30 years ago. I got invested in the characters, the bad guys were more nuanced than most, and the models and music were excellent. So, it was a fun nostalgia exercise for Dave and an enjoyable discovery of a new TV show for me.
