I remembered a while ago that I read and enjoyed an Iris Murdoch novel once, so I bought another one.

I don't know why I like them, though. Very little actually happens and few of the characters are likeable. But they're dense and complex and brilliantly observant of human nature.

This one is about the inhabitants of a small English village and how they spend all their time watching, thinking about and speculating upon the activities of the others.

The text is weighty and it feels as if it's mostly being told rather than shown, but I found it utterly absorbing and endlessly fascinating. Must add more of her works to my wish list.
