On Friday, we went to see Kit Harington in Dr Faustus, a play I have always been rather fond of, since I studied it at A Level. It would be fair to say that the adaptation was quite weird, as well as rather unpleasant in places, though also rather interesting. The two sections in the middle, where they switched to modern speech were performed best, in my opinion, as the whole cast seemed to think the way to treat Marlowe's verse was to stand about woodenly and shout, which was a shame. Mephistophilis didn't make much of an impression, and I think the most impressive things about Kit Harington's performance was his six-pack (though how he maintains that while eating sandwiches and pizza on stage every night is beyond me). That's not to say that his performance was bad, rather more that his six-pack was very striking, though I did feel his almost raspy delivery lacked nuance. Still, it had its moments, and it was worth seeing.

On Saturday, we went to see Travels With My Aunt in Chichester, which was very good. I do like a musical, and the production values were high. The cast did an excellent job - the chorus were versatile and energetic, and the leads were compelling. I didn't know the story going in, and it was a fun romp, involving intrigue, danger and humour. An excellent afternoon's entertainment.

Last night, we went to see X-Men: Apocalypse. Today, I read the Empire two-star review, and could understand their criticisms, though I didn't necessarily agree with all of them. Several of the new (and returning) characters had very little to do, and bits of it were a bit clunky, but overall I thought it was a pretty good film, and really enjoyed it. I would certainly put it on a par with Captain America: Civil War (which Empire gave five stars) and Batman Vs Superman (though I know I'm in a minority in liking that). It was emotive, exciting, funny in places, and I thought it generally held together well.
