The Dream Thieves
Mar. 23rd, 2016 02:34 pmI returned to The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater this week - Book Two: The Dream Thieves.
I enjoyed it, though not as much as I enjoyed the first one.
The main part of the plot (Ronan and his nemesis, Kavinski, stealing objects from their dreams) felt much more over the top than the magic in the first book, somehow. Plus, the sudden introduction of Kavinski, and his tremendous importance to the arc plot, seemed contrived, when we'd never heard of him before.
Still, the characters were still compelling - particularly the adults, interestingly enough. I just love the various psychics who live at Blue's house, and the development of The Grey Man from antagonist to ally was very well done. It's great to even find three-dimensional adult characters in a young adult novel series - and their involvement in the plot is gratifying, rather than having the kids try to handle everything themselves.
The narrator for this series is also very good - Will Patton. He has a wonderful range of distinctive voices for the characters, and an intensity to his narration, which I'm sure adds an extra layer of tension to the action that I wouldn't have experienced just reading a hard copy of the book.
So, I will definitely listen to the third and fourth books in the series, though perhaps not as quickly as I'd originally planned.
