The Raven Cycle

alobearLots of people in the online writing community I joined at new year keep going on about something called The Raven Cycle by Maggie Steifvater. I was intrigued, so I got the audiobook of the first volume - The Raven Boys - and wow, I can see why the fangirls squee over this!
It's a bit like going to the cinema to see a film where the music is slightly over-the-top, to the extent that you can feel your emotions being manipulated, but you can't help being affected by it anyway. The four Raven Boys of the title are *perfectly* designed (each in a slightly different way) to produce desperate adoration in teenage fangirls (and apparently middle-aged fangirls, too, if I'm anything to go by). Subtle, it ain't - oh, look, Ronan can't be all bad, because he's looking after the baby bird! But it got to me so much that I was reacting to it out loud in the street on the way to and from work.
I decided not to question it or pick holes in it - so I just gave myself over to the experience, and it was glorious. Books two and three are now on my phone ready to be dived into - and the final volume is out in April - so yay!
