Thursday saw as at Alexandra Palace for a Frank Turner gig, which was stonkingly good. He is an excellent showman, with ridiculous amounts of energy onstage, and a repertoire of excellent and quite varied songs. He switched between joy-inducing barn-stormers and emotive acoustic numbers, and it was all great. My favourite moment, though, (of this, or perhaps any gig) was jumping up and down to many thousands of people chanting, "There is no god!" Tremendous.
Thursday also saw completion of my latest print book - the second in the Alex Rider series, by Anthony Horowitz - Point Blanc. I remember enjoying the film of Stormbreaker some years ago, and Dave randomly decided to buy me the next book in the series to try. Overall, it was a lot of fun, very pacey, quite exciting, and a very quick read. I did have a few issues with it, though. For a start, Alex is just *too* good at everything, which makes him less interesting than a more flawed character would be. More specifically, the section where the bad guy handcuffed him to a chair and monologued his entire plan for six pages was rather disappointing, as it felt like sloppy writing, and it would have been more satisfying for Alex to have worked out more of the plot on his own. Lastly, I was rather disturbed by Alex making bad jokes directly after killing someone - I mean, he's 14 years old - is he really so blase about violence? Still, I have purchased the next in the series in audio format, as I have heard tell that the narrator is good, and I think the series will make good exercise listening, if nothing else.
Then, last night, Dave and I volunteered at You Me Bum Bum Train. We took part as passengers in August 2012, which was - an experience... This time, we were part of a crowd scene, which saw 70 passengers go through in one evening, so it was mostly clapping and cheering. I positioned myself by the exit and formed part of the high-five line as each passenger went out - so I got to high-five Tom Daley, which was cool. From what I heard tell from other people in the cast, it sounds like Dave and I got off extremely lightly the year we were passengers - it I'd had to go through some of the scenes I heard about last night, I think I might have had to use the escape phrase...
