Dave suddenly decided to book *all the things* for October, so it's going to be reviews heavy for a few weeks.  And what a great start!

Wednesday was the Walk Off The Earth gig at the Camden Roundhouse.  I was only introduced to this band a couple of weeks ago and they're absolutely great.  They do clever and entertaining videos, and their live show is just as inventive.  They're all ridiculously talented and take on multiple roles, and I really love their music - bouncy, invigorating, catchy, uplifting - awesome stuff!  Plus, I got a front row balcony seat, so I got to watch the show and the crowd, and didn't have to stand up for two hours - result!

Thursday was the Trumbo Premiere, which was all sorts of fancy.  We got to walk the red carpet at Leicester Square (woefully under-dressed);the seats were padded; there was free chocolate; a man played a glowing wurlitzer on the stage, which changed colour and disappeared into the floor when the film was about to start; and Helen Mirren was there in very sparkly shoes.  The film was also extremely good - political and intellectual and humorous and very well shot and very well acted.  I was particularly pleased to see Alan Tudyk and Dean O'Gorman doing great work with excellent roles.  But it was Bryan Cranston's movie - and what a performance!  I urge people to go and see this if they get the chance.

Friday was a wholly unexpected stage adaptation of Tipping the Velvet, which had me a little worried at the very start, but quickly developed into a really fantastic and very unusual show.  There was Victorian drama, modern songs, singing meat, circus acrobatics, social commentary, Vaudeville, breaking of the fourth wall, and very cool set changes - and it was gloriously bonkers and very effective.  Really not what I was expecting going in, as a massive fan of the TV adaptation, but extremely enjoyable, all told.

I also read the collected volume of Spellbinders, a one-off Marvel comic written by Mike Carey.  It had high schoolers with witch powers, battling a supernatural threat, but was elevated above its subject matter by very sharp and witty writing that made the kids seem very real, at the same time as being very distinctive.  An impressive combination.

Much more excitement still to come for the month - at least another four outings before November!
